My Worth Is Not in What I Own – Feat. John Piper, Keith & Kristyn Getty, We Are Messengers

My worth is not in what I own

Not in the strength of flesh and bone

But in the costly wounds of love

At the cross

My worth is not in skill or name

In win or lose, in pride or shame

But in the blood of Christ that flowed

At the cross

I rejoice in my Redeemer

Greatest Treasure

Wellspring of my soul

I will trust in Him, no other

My soul is satisfied in Him alone

As summer flowers we fade and die

Fame, youth and beauty hurry by

But life eternal calls to us

At the cross

I will not boast in wealth or might

Or human wisdom’s fleeting light

But I will boast in knowing Christ

At the cross

I rejoice in my Redeemer

Greatest Treasure

Wellspring of my soul

I will trust in Him, no other

My soul is satisfied in Him alone

Two wonders here that I confess

My worth and my unworthiness

My value fixed, my ransom paid

At the cross

I rejoice in my Redeemer

Greatest Treasure

Wellspring of my soul

I will trust in Him, no other

My soul is satisfied in Him alone

I rejoice in my Redeemer

Greatest Treasure

Wellspring of my soul

I will trust in Him, no other

My soul is satisfied in Him alone

Abba,

Worth.

Value.

Significance.

Does my life matter?

Does my person have meaning?

Am I desired, wanted?

These are deeply rooted questions that burn in every living soul’s heart and mind.  We spend our lives chasing answers to these questions in a plethora of ways.  Relationships.  Sex appeal.  Looks.  Skill.  Success.  Accomplishment.  Praise of man.  Recognition.  Wealth.  Fame.  And the list could go on and on.

So many of us live with disappointment, disillusionment, depression, anger, resentment, and sorrow at the failure to find the answer we desire or seek these questions.  When the world fails us; when others fail us; when we fail ourselves, we become empty shells, hollow, brittle, fragile, and easily shattered.

Or worse

We become filled with the wrong things.  We seek to fill up the emptiness that is now left behind with pleasure and comfort, indulging every and any whim in the hopes to fill up what we feel we are lacking in our sense of identity, value, purpose, and significance.

This is what makes these words so precious and valuable….

Galatians 2:20–21 (ESV): 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.

Where is our worth found?

Where is our value rooted?

Where is our significance sourced from?

Is not from self.

But from You, Jesus.

Paul, in writing to the Galatians addresses this issue of identity.  The early church was struggling.  Abba, you had turned everything on its head.  Centuries of law and sacrifices replaced in a moment by grace because THE PERFECT LAMB had come.  Everything changed.  Your plan now included the pagan Gentile nations, us, and through Jesus, you were bringing all men to oneness and unity.

But we men like to cling to what is familiar.  What we can control.  We like to cling to that which we believe sets us apart.  For Israel, your special and chosen people….who still are and ever will be…they clung to their identity and value in who You set them apart to be.  They cling their worth and value as it was tied to their unique way of life.

But then you changed it.

Who were they now?  What significance and value did their lives hold now that Gentiles were involved?

The answer…You….Jesus.

The same answer that had always been true but was now revealed more clearly to them.

Their worth and value was never found in their unique way of life with it’s laws and sacrifices.  It was ALWAYS found in YOUR PERSON AND BEING as God and your selection and choice of them as your people.

But somehow, this truth got lost in the national identity that was established.  They turned what you intended for good into an ultimate thing and lost their way when you once more changed it.

The tension in Galatians, in the early church; the tension in our lives can be resolved easily and simply when we are reminded of this truth….

Our identity is You.

Our worth is You.

Our value is You.

Our significance is You.

Is never was found in anything other than this.  It never will be found in anything other than this.

Our significance and value, our worth and identity is found in the reality of our death and resurrection with You, Jesus.

I have been crucified.  I have died.  The life in me is not my own.  It comes from You.  It is Your Life, Jesus.  It is a life lived by faith in You.  It is not lived by sight.  It is not lived in my might.  It is lived as You, Jesus, live in me.

My worth is not in what I own

But in the costly wounds of love

At the cross
