Life beckons to us

Holding out promises

Offering hope for our souls

Claiming true happiness to possess

But false claims they be

For how can what is broken

Be the source of deep satisfactions

When it fails so commonly?

That thing upon which we rest our hopes

Simply cannot handle the weight

The strength gives out long before

The desire of our hearts is satisfied

Hope is too much to rest

Upon a husband to love well

When his own flesh

Is poisoned by selfishness

Hope is too much to rest

On the intimacy of a wife

Whose own hurt and pain

Has erected barriers thick and high

Hope is too much to rest

Upon the respect and admiration of others

Still controlled by passions and lusts

Fickle and fleeting in their fancies

Hope is too much to rest

Upon success and accomplishment

When so many are intent

On taking what they have not earned.

Hope is too much to rest

On ease filled living and comfort

When life is hard, demanding work

When we know all to well how it fails and fades

What security and hope is there

In temporal, broken things?

What do we have to look forward to

In the broken and dysfunction of life?

Hope cannot rest upon these

For their very nature limits them

The demand for hope will overwhelm

And they will not bear the strain of it.

No.  No, true hope is found elsewhere

Hope is found in one who never changes

Hope rests in an eternal love

Hope rests in an enduring ultimate sacrifice

Who else loves enough

To create us simply too know and enjoy

To be known and enjoyed

By He who IS the greatest good?

Who else promises to love

And makes good on that promise

To be faithful at all times

To be true and devoted unconditionally?

Who else displayed that love

By paying the ultimate cost

To satisfy the demands

Of MY rebellion and offense?

Who else has taken the initiative

To restore and reconcile a relationship

Destroyed by the very person

They are initiating with?

Who else would pay such a cost

Instead of just walking away

Writing off the expense

And washing their hands of it all?

None other than…

No one else but he…

Never any other…

Than JESUS, God Himself, Creator of all!

His alone is a name

To rest all hope upon

His name alone

Has the power to infuse hope!

His alone is a foundation firm

A future assured

A faithfulness sound

A presence reliable

It is upon His name that hope rests

It is to His lovely face I look

It is his name upon my lips

It is upon Him that I wait.
