5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Ps 62:5–8.
Abba,
Silence.
True humble silence.
Silence that desires to receive, to hear, to learn, to wait upon You.
This kind of silence is rare, even to us who follow You.
When was the last time we actively sat in silence before Your word, humbly seeking Your Spirit’s leading, teaching, enlightening?
When was the last time we chose to remain silent recognizing our utter lack of qualifications to speak?
When was the last time we truly desired to learn?
When was the last time we truly desired to draw near?
When was the last time we truly desired to still our own foolish minds to listen for one wiser and better than we?
When was the last time we truly stopped distracting ourselves and filling ourselves up with all that is less so that we could be silence and hear that which is more?
We so fill our lives with noise that we fail to honor and value the worth of humble silence before Your word. And I mean more than merely sitting in a state that is absent of noise. We can sit with an absence of eternal noise and still not be sitting in silence. In our hearts and in our minds, the volume of sound can be pumping and pulsating at an incredible decibel and rate. Sitting is silence is about MORE than merely hitting the power button on all the electronics around us. It is about purposefully and intentionally stifling the onslaught of all but YOUR voice.
Having a heart of silence is about having a heart of humility.
Having a heart of silence is about trust.
Having a heart of silence is about looking to another, to You Abba, for hope.
Having a heart of silence is about You.
Having a heart of silence, of waiting is about drawing near to Your person for all we need.
It is a complete paradigm shift. We shift from thinking that things will satisfy us to realizing only You can.
Waiting teaches us to value YOU above that which we seek and erroneously think will satisfy.
Waiting teaches us to draw near to You. Waiting compels us to come.
Silence conditions us to value Your word, Your presence, Your being.
Silence and waiting redirect our focus and gaze upon the thing of truest worth.
You.
Oh that we would come to value the worth of silence.
Oh that we would come to cherish the waiting with hope.
For in so valuing and cherishing, we are led to You.
