13 For I hear the whispering of many—

terror on every side!—

as they scheme together against me,

as they plot to take my life.

14  But I trust in you, O Lord;

I say, “You are my God.”

15  My times are in your hand;

rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!

16  Make your face shine on your servant;

save me in your steadfast love!

Psalm 31:13–16 (ESV)

My times are in your hand.

Abba,

Time.

It is all Yours. You created it. You control it. The times for every living thing and person is in YOUR hands.

We tend to think we control it. We tend to think that our time is ours and ours alone. But we don’t. It is not our’s.

Time is Yours.

It is a gift from You. It is a gift affording us opportunity to repent and draw near to You.

When we do repent and belief, it is a gift that is preparing us for eternity; the eternity You are preparing for us.

This gift of time is intended to press our gaze and focus beyond the boundaries of time, past the furthest limits we can view so that we behold You.

“…behind these times of our lives traces of God become visible, that under our paths are they deepest shafts of eternity and every step back brings a quiet echo from eternity.”

Bonhoeffer, Dietrich, and Jana Riess. God Is in the Manger: Reflections on Advent and Christmas. Westminster John Knox Press, 2012.

This is a provocative view of time and eternity. Behind every moment in time, beneath every second, above every minute, beyond every hour, YOU are there. When we have eyes to see, ears to see, faith to comprehend, time is nothing more than another means to lay hold of You, to serve You, to know Your blessings, to prepare for our eternal home with You.

Good, bad, indifferent…every moment of time affords us the opportunity to know You, to delight in You, to serve You, and to delight in all that You are doing both inside and outside of time.

Therefore, we are led to ask…

How are we delighting in the gift of time as means to know You more?

How are we using our time for eternity?

What is the gift of time teaching us about Your glorious being?

How can we, today, behold the shafts of eternity beneath the paths of time the make up our lives?
