Rapscallion – Someone who causes trouble
Rom 3:10–18; Eph 2:1–9; Luke 19:10; John 15
We all like
a good arch villain.
We all love to hate
that “one in a million.”
We all cheer
the classic underdog story
where the malicious predator
is heroically overcome by its quarry.
But—truth be told,
sin makes rapscallions
of us all.
We are the villain.
Sin, and its evil, awakens
rebellion in the heart;
a curse originating
ere long from creation’s start.
Yet, the villainous adversary
that we both cheer — and hate
we distinguish from our own evil,
which we staunchly repudiate.
But its truth
cannot be ignored—
we are Hell’s
villainous rapscallions.
It is only
by His amazing grace
that we are anything other
than an eternal disgrace.
By His love,
that which is evil
is redeemed
in heaven’s epic retrieval.
He sought after—
and recovered—
those who had chosen rebellion.
Redeeming the evil of pride’s making
is what grace is all about,
so that forever and ever
all creation will shout
the praises of His glory,
the wonders of His resplendent account,
and the eternal delight of His presence—
all too numerous and abundant to recount!
Truly—
only by grace
could such a reverse be!
